Bloody Valentine is an early ‘naughts pop-punk flash bomb. A collab with Travis Barker, the first release appeared May 7th as a low budget vid filmed in MGK’s driveway with Travis keeping beat in the garage, drumsticks a’ flipping. Dropped in the thick of social distancing monotony, the fun and nostalgic track connected right away and introduced MGK’s range outside of rap to a larger audience. The hit had an official music video release shortly after which came with the full cinematic treatment. The true ‘naughts icon Megan Fox plays a lip-glossed anti-heroine bent on hurting MGK’s feelings, a role that’s familiar to be sure, but it’s nice to see her again all the same.
Yesterday a second reworking of Bloody Valentine dropped for an acoustic retelling. It’s here that the fruits of recent creative experimentation pay off. MGK has been playin’ around. Covering everything from Rihanna’s Love On The Brain (at Marilyn Manson’s suggestion) Rage Against the Machine’s Killing in the Name to -yes- Champagne Supernova (Wonderwall jokes incoming) MGK has used pandemic restrictions to his benefit, sharing a series of jams simply titled the Lockdown Sessions. Travis has also been keeping idle hands at bay with a string of recent musical contributions, notably a live-streamed Nirvana cover show with Post Malone to raise funds for frontline workers during the COVID-19 crisis.
